It's time for Rudolph's Race Labels Contest!

Thanksgiving is next week, and is the perfect time to clip, clip, clip!  Start clipping and help Rudolph win the race for your child's class! The contest dates are Friday, November 21st - Friday, December 12th.

The class from the K-2 side, and the class from the 3-5 side that collects the most labels (Box Tops and Campbell's labels combined) will each receive $50 worth of classroom supplies, and each student in the 2 winning classes will receive a stocking with their own individual prizes inside as well!

Campbell's labels must have the barcode attached to the point value. Please send these in in a zip lock bag with your child's name and teachers name on the bags.

Dear Potential Carnival Sponsors...

Dear Potential Sponsors,
The Lansing Elementary School (LES) Parent Teachers Association (PTA) will be hosting our annual LES Carnival on September 26th, 2014. This major event is open to the entire community and continually brings all of our students, staff, and their families together for a fun family night out.  As support and attendance for this event continues to grow, we strive to ensure this event becomes increasingly memorable.  With this endeavor in mind, we have added additional inflatable bounce houses, slides, and games.  We have also added additional carnival games, concessions, and snack stations and strive to increase the quality of raffle prizes.

Due to the increase in cost that correlates directly to our efforts to provide a more memorable and fun event, we are asking for your help.  This event is one of the PTAs’ primary means of raising monetary support for our school programs that are not covered by Kansas State or Federal educational funding. Due to this, we are trying to improve the quality of this event without drastically increasing our overhead cost in order to apply the funds raised to what truly matters, the education and enrichment of the young students in our community.

Overall, financial support from potential sponsors will allow us to improve the quality of our event without taking away vital funds that improve the quality of educational enrichment of LES students.  With this goal in mind, the PTA has decided to reach out to our community and we hope you will consider sponsoring through one of the levels below

Lions Pride - $250.00
· Business/Family Recognition on signage displayed at premium inflatable or dunk tank (choice based on first come basis)
· Business/Family name listed on pre-sale event flyer
· Business/Family name listed on PTA blog & Facebook
· & Business/Family recognition in newspaper prior to and after event
· 20 raffle tickets

Den Member - $100.00
· Business/Family Recognition on signage displayed at inflatable, cakewalk, or snack concession stand (choice based on first come basis)
· Business/Family name listed on pre-sale event flyer
· Business/Family name listed on PTA blog & Facebook
· 10 raffle tickets

Paw Print - $50.00
· Business/Family Recognition on signage displayed at a carnival game (choice based on first come basis)

PTA- Join today!

Have you registered as a member of the LES PTA yet? Do not forget, not only does your $7.00 membership dues help to support the school, but it also gets you the 2014-2015 student directory. This year the directory includes an events calendar!

Did you know by being a PTA member that you can receive discounts on car insurance, car rental, travel and other savings? You will be able to receive these benefits immediately after activating your membership card (which should go home with your students within the next couple of weeks) as there is a $10 off coupon which you can print off and use at Office Max. In many cases, this savings will be more than your annual dues to join PTA

If you have not yet sent in your membership dues for the 2014-2015 school year, and no longer have the envelope sent home with your student, you can print off this one and send it in with your student.

Where Does Your Money Go Monday #3

This week's Where Does Your Money Go Monday focuses on your PTA Membership Fee.

At the local level a portion of your $7.00 membership fee stays here at Lansing Elementary School and helps to fund PTA supported programs (see previous Where Does My Money Go Monday posts for details of these programs). It also pays for the school directory that PTA Members receive.
A portion goes to the state level Kansas PTA, where the money helps fund leadership training workshops, membership mailings, educational conferences, legislative advocacy, grant processing, publications, video processing, and scholarships.
A portion also goes to the National PTA where your money helps the PTA focus attention on the problems facing schools today, provides representation in Washington D.C. and helps provide information and leadership to over six million members of the largest grass roots child advocacy organization in the world.

We are accepting membership forms/ payment for the 2014-2015 school year now! Reach out to a PTA Executive Board member, come to our last PTA meeting of the school year, or keep an eye out for us at back to school nights for your students where we will have representatives available to answer questions and accept your membership registration.

Harlem Wizards Game!

Join us on May 2nd at Lansing High School for a 7:00 pm game! Doors open at 6:00 pm.

Where Does Your Money Go Monday #2

Welcome back to another Where Does Your Money Go Monday!

Have you ever wondered how the school can manage to take your child on field trips for only $5-7 dollars? They can keep the costs so low because the PTA pays for busing for field trips, and even supplements the cost of some of the field trips to keep the costs down for you.

In the closing statement of recent online article from EducationNext on the Educational Value of Field Trips, the authors state

"We don’t just want our children to acquire work skills from their education; we also want them to develop into civilized people who appreciate the breadth of human accomplishments. The school field trip is an important tool for meeting this goal."

Your donations. and support of your children's fundraising efforts help our schools to continue to provide these opportunities to our children.

Thank you for your support.

What are my responsibilities as a PTA Member?

Many people hesitate to join the PTA because they are not sure what will be expected of them once they pay their $7.00 membership dues and are officially a PTA member.

You can be as active in the PTA as you would like. You can volunteer to help with fundraisers, or setting up for events, you can come to the monthly PTA meetings to vote on issues/ funding requests that come to PTA, or you can just support us by being a member.

What you are able to do is really up to your schedule and your availability. You will find that it's very rewarding to help better your children's and peers experience at school by showing them you are there to help and participate in building their future. But even if you are not able to come to the meetings (the 1st Wednesday of each month, at 6:30 pm in the school library.. childcare is provided!) or provide support at an event, just being a member supports your child and his/her teachers.

The membership form includes a section asking how active you would like to be in the PTA. If you are not interested in anything more than the general membership, and the school directory only available to PTA members, then just leave that section blank and we will understand.

We are now accepting memberships for the 2014-2015 school year!

Where Does Your Money Go Monday #1

Here is another Where Does Your Money Go post! I have decided to post one of these every Monday. How does "Where Does Your Money Go Mondays" sound?

Does your student brings home an agenda every day? Yep, those are purchased with funds raised by the PTA.

As a mom I really appreciate these. Having a method to communicate with the teacher, to see what homework my child has, and to be responsible for signing it each day so that the teacher knows that I saw it is a great idea. This is also a good way for the teachers to ensure that the parents are aware of what assignments there are, especially if you have one of those kids that conveniently forgets their homework, or says that they do not have any at all.

Where does your money go?

Many people wonder where the funds raised through all of those candy bar sales, and wrapping paper fundraisers etc. go. I know that I had no idea before I joined the PTA this past year. One of the goals of this years PTA Executive Board is to improve our communication. Not just of events and fundraisers, but of what the PTA does for your children. If you have a specific question or comment, feel free to leave it on our Facebook page or in a comment here on the blog. We will do our best to answer any questions left on either forum.

One of the programs that the PTA funds are the Friday Folders that your students bring home each week. These folders help the teachers and the parents keep track of their students work and items that need to be returned each week, in a plastic folder that will hopefully last the entire school year.
